Message from the Dean

Welcome to the website of the School of American and Comparative Law at the China University of Political Science and Law!

The School of American and Comparative Law (SACL) was established at the end of 2002, and focuses on the teaching and research of American law, as well as of comparative law from the perspective of the American legal tradition. The school offers master’s and doctorate degrees in comparative law, as well as a joint bachelor-master’s degree in jurisprudence. It is also involved in student curricula at other schools and departments of the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) through a variety of programs.

Beginning from the summer of [2006], SACL will collaborate with the University of Minnesota Law School in offering an LL.M. program, through which qualified candidates may obtain LL.M. degrees from the University of Minnesota Law School and accredited by the American Bar Association. A summer study-in-China program for U.S. J.D. students has also begun operation in 2006. Both programs thus enable SACL to play a role in American legal education as well.

Under the direction and support of the Ministry of Education and the President’s office at CUPL, SACL has recruited a strong team of full-time faculty members, consisting of graduates from law schools at Harvard, Yale, University of Virginia, University of Minnesota, University of Hawaii, and other leading American universities. It has also invited scholars specializing in American law at other schools and departments of CUPL to serve as joint faculty (primarily as supervisors of doctoral candidates). In addition, prominent U.S. and Chinese scholars and other figures in the field of law act as visiting or honorary faculty members.

We are fully aware that, to realize its goals of promoting the teaching and research of American and comparative law, and thereby promoting legal scholarship and the rule of law in China, SACL must expand and strengthen both its faculty and student body. Therefore we welcome high-quality scholars interested in the teaching and research of American and comparative law, and motivated students with high levels of English proficiency, to join our school. And we look forward to productive collaborations and exchanges with our fellow institutions and scholars.

Thank you for your interest in the SACL!
